Fire changes a landscape.
And yet, for some plants, fire can also create the conditions for new life.
At the center of From Fire Healing Begins is the Banksia, a remarkable Australian botanical associated with landscapes shaped by fire. In fire-adapted Banksia species, heat can help trigger the release of seeds held within woody follicles, allowing regeneration to begin after the landscape has burned.
Around it grow turkey tail mushrooms, flowers, leaves, and richly layered organic forms, creating a world concerned not with returning to what existed before, but with regeneration.
I painted this piece thinking about loss and what happens afterward. Healing doesn't erase the fire or restore the landscape exactly as it was.
Something different grows from it.
From Fire Healing Begins is about that first tender evidence of life after devastation: the moment healing begins.
