Some flowers are simply meant to bloom later.
The Late Garden is the largest painting in Emergence, filled with dahlias at different stages of bloom, caterpillars, butterflies, berries, leaves, roots, and small flashes of turquoise chrysalis suspended throughout a deep garden of blue and green.
The dahlia became the perfect flower for this stage of the series. It reaches its greatest abundance late in the growing season, when much of the garden has already had its moment.
This painting is deeply connected to my own experience of entering a new creative chapter in midlife. I wanted to make a painting that rejected the idea that our most vital season must happen when we are young.
There is no universal schedule for becoming.
The Late Garden celebrates the woman who blooms when she is ready and discovers that arriving later does not make the flowering any less magnificent.
